Horror is often psychological, rather than visual. In Beholder, you play a landlord of an apartment building that's chock-full of government spying tools, and your job is to monitor your tenants and report their misdeeds to the authorities, whose punishments will be grim. Or will you end up empathizing with these people? You'll have to find the balance between protecting them from the police state and protecting yourself -- and each choice you make along the way will influence which ending you get.
You can get the whole game for $4.99, with no ads or in-app purchases.
Death Road to Canada
Despite its name, Death Road to Canada is a much lighter game. It takes a page from Oregon Trail, right down to the retro pixelated graphics, and puts it through a Walking Dead treatment. You'll scavenge the land for food, weapons, ammo, and medical supplies; gather people to your cause and possibly lose them minutes later; and deal with a highly randomized series of forking decisions that will give you a pretty different experience every time you play. Do you go high-risk, high-reward? What dangers are you willing to brave for more gasoline or shotgun shells? Along the way, you will collect special skulls that give you Zombo Points -- you use these to permanently unlock certain options, like the ability to start as a Mechanic, which gives you a wrench, repair skills, and a bonus to physical fitness (remember Zombieland -- cardio is crucial in a zombie apocalypse).
At $11.99, Death Road to Canada is relatively expensive for an iPhone game, but it's packed with a variety of content and charm to keep things fresh, challenging, and entertaining. And it plays as well on a phone as it does on a tablet.
I Have No Mouth (and I Must Scream)
If this title sounds familiar, that's because this point-and-click adventure game is adapted from the short story of the same name, written by celebrated author Harlan Ellison in 1967. The iPhone and iPad version is actually a full remake of the original 1995 release, which Ellison himself contributed to with an extended storyline, more dialog, and even voice acting.
In I Have No Mouth, you will play from several different character perspectives as you figure out how to defeat an evil supercomputer that's taken over the world and killed off nearly everyone. Each of these characters has a backstory that will influence your decisions. The puzzles can get '90s-adventure-game challenging, right down to hunting pixels for things to pick up, but the narrative is arguably worth the struggle. You can grab it at the App Store for just $3.99.
Severed
Severed won Apple's own 'iPad Game of the Year' award in 2016, and it's easy to see why. This highly polished action-adventure game features a vibrant art style, sensible touchscreen controls, and an interesting mythology. You start the game with one of your arms severed, but good news! You can wear the body parts of your defeated enemies, or use them to beef up your gear and character skills. While this sounds macabre, it's handled in a way that's safe for PG-13 audiences. As for music and other audio, this game definitely benefits from headphones to fully immerse yourself in the lush soundscape.
Severed is $6.99 at the App Store and comes with a free sticker pack. If you have a newer iPhone or iPad, the game also supports gameplay recording, fancier visuals, and 3D Touch. Everyone gets cloud saves, achievements, and different difficulty modes.
Tormentum
With an art style openly inspired by H.R. Giger (and an uncredited dose of Lovecraftian horror) the strange world of Tormentum is replete with bio-mechanical grotesqueries and intricately dense visual design that just have to be seen to be believed. As the main character, you start without memories and must figure out why they've been taken from you. Along the way (estimated to take 4-6 hours), you'll meet strange denizens, solve puzzles, wander a lush and dangerous landscape, and make moral decisions that will determine how the story ends. Tormentum is just $4.99 at the App Store, with no ads or in-app transactions.
This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.

This game is fun
I used to play this game as a little girl and it was the best game ever and then I started to play it today and it reminded me of all the time that I would race my sisters and see who got the best score and play it for hours and hours until my tablet would die then I would play it on my dads phone. So you would really like this game it is fun and easy it is not had at all so you should get it.
